This page presents a broad overview of the requirements for the major, the double major, and the minor. Check the General Catalog for additional information, such as course prerequisites and GPA requirements.

The Major

The major in the Study of Religion consists of twelve upper-division courses.

  • RELI 110A or 110B, and
  • RELI 112 or 113, and
  • Ten upper-division electives approved by the Study of Religion program

All courses must be taken for a letter grade.

Students are encouraged to study abroad. Up to three upper-division electives taken abroad may be approved for credit toward the major through petition. The required courses (RELI 110A or B, and RELI 112 or 113) must be taken at UCSD.

The Double Major

The double major consists of 12 upper-division courses as noted above. It may be possible for up to two courses to overlap between the majors. Consult both departments or programs and your college about your academic plan.

The Minor

The minor in the Study of Religion consists of seven courses, of which five must be upper division.

  • RELI 110A or 110B, and
  • RELI 112 or 113, and
  • Five electives approved by the Study of Religion program

All courses must be taken for a letter grade.

Students are encouraged to study abroad. Up to two upper-division electives taken abroad may be approved for credit toward the minor through petition. The required courses (RELI 110A or B, and RELI 112 or 113) must be taken at UCSD.

It may be possible to apply two lower-division college requirements to the minor (e.g., Revelle students may apply HUM 1 and HUM 2, and ERC students may apply MMW 2 and MMW 3). Please consult your college adviser.
