Honors Program
The program for the Study of Religion offers an Honors program for
students who demonstrate excellence in the major. Generally, students are completing their last two quarters (winter and
spring) when they enroll in the Honors program.
The program is designed
for a limited number of students who have demonstrated excellence in the
Religion major. It is recommended for students who 1) have a strong
interest in doing original research, 2) intend to pursue graduate study,
in religion or other academic fields, or 3) intend to pursue other work
that will entail research.
The minimum eligibility requirements
are
-
Completion of at least six upper
division courses within the major. (Most students will have
completed all or most of their coursework for the major prior to
enrolling in the Honors program.)
-
-
Completion of at least 90 units
(typically a student will have senior status and will graduate
during the second quarter of the Honors program).
-
GPA of 3.5 in upper-division major
courses and 3.3 overall.
Participation in the
program is contingent upon the approval of the Honors
proposal by the Religion director. Students must obtain approval
before the first day of the quarter in which they enroll in RELI 196H
"Honors Thesis in Religion"; therefore, proposals
are due at the Religion office by the tenth week of the prior quarter (usually fall quarter of
the senior year).
Proposals are
prepared under the guidance of a faculty adviser. Students are advised
to locate an appropriate faculty adviser and begin working on their
proposals during their junior year.

the the Honors Program
handout (PDF) for more information, and download the
